Recovery does not mean playing. Recovery could be walking around and having an every day (hopefully pain free) existence. Playing a contact sport at the speed of the NHL could take a lot more time and training.

Obviously will take some time to get back into a rhythm and get up to NHL pace, but it’s not like the guy is bed ridden. He’s been an elite athlete since he was 15 years old and was skating during the summer.
Okay, let's say he is traded for today, get's the surgery today, and does take just five months to get game ready. That would mean his first game would be April 1st (no irony there). He would be stepping into the playoff push at game 69 of the season, and have more than a full year between shifts. That's a tall order, especially when expectations would be so high. Think it might take a while to get his hands back after not playing for a year, having a new neck, and then having a new team? And that's if everything goes according to plan.
