The Tkachuk's are excellent at maximizing their salary. It's very impressive. I don't mean to insult Tkachuk by calling him greedy. If anything, it's professional, because hockey is a business.
But I also think those who take hometown discounts and show loyalty to the city should be rewarded.

Lindholm is underpaid. But he doesn't have a ton of term left. And he didn't really sign a discount. Rather, the contract was just a genius moves by Treliving.

Johnny seems more likely to sign a reasonable contract that Tkachuk. But this is getting into pure speculative territory.

Backlund is unbelievably outstanding in the community. He's not underpaid now, but he has been underpaid for a lot of his tenure with the Flames.
If being the captain means being great in the community, Backlund should get it hands down. We don't really know what goes on in the dressing room, so it's tough to guess who is actually the best leader.

I'm confident that the Flames will make a good choice. The Flames have had good captains for a lot of their history. It's one of the long term organizational strengths. Just like how they've always been good at drafting and developing small/skilled players.
Lol, jump to conclusions much?
