I took the episode as confirming that Rick was from this universe. He states to bird person that this version of him matters. Rick them tries to save the same version. The version of Beth line could mean that Beth is a clone, or he grabbed her from another timeline. If this was a different version of Rick, why would he care about this bird person. Unless he had already jumped before the battle, in which case you could be right.

I'm confused about all this. Didn't we witness this Rick and Morty leave a timeline and enter another one in S1 E6? And later we saw that Beth was still alive but now more savage? Why would this timeline suddenly matter when Rick seemingly chose it at random back then.
