They don't need anyone to fill in anywhere. They're very clearly trying to be the worst team in the league next year (and have some competition from other teams). The only thing they care about is hitting the cap-floor so they can legally play (and lose) games.

Monahan still has value. I don’t think a player like Monahan is enough to take them out of the basement of the NHL. But he could get minutes and rebound his production. He would then have even more value at the trade deadline. Plus more teams will be able to take him on with the pro-rated cap space at that point. And he would still have a year left on his contract at a reasonable cap hit. Monahan could easily be worth a first round pick + prospect to a playoff team by the trade deadline.
