How am I destroyed?
The Flames have the best defensive D-man in at least the conference and he is only out against McDavid nominally more than Gio. As far as the match-up are concerned Tanev only was matched against McDavid at 54 - 46 to Gio.
I guess the Flames coaches were outcoached and line matched or just didn't see the need to have Tanev out against McDavid.
When the Jets actually shut McDavid down
Morrissey was on the ice with McDavid
Game 1 59% of the time Edmonton home team
Game 2 60% of the time Edmonton home team
Game 3 91% of the time Winnipeg home Team
Game 4 74% of the time Winnipeg home Team
Chiarot against Matthews
Game 5 Leafs up 3-1 74%
Game 6 75%
Game 7 75%
That is what a team does when it has a shut down defenseman
True the Flames did not play any games as important as these games against Edmonton but they should have been trying to get the Tanev match ups at more than 54 %
Calgary against McDavid
game 1 Tanev 74% W 6-4
game 2 Tanev 56% Hannifin 94% L 2-1
Game 3 tanev 35% L 1-7
Game 4 Tanev 51% L 2-3
Game 5 Tanev 57% W 4-3
Game 6 Tanev 73% L 3-7
Game 7 Tanev 29 % L 2-3
Game 8 Gio 91 % Tanev 78 % W 5-0
Game 9 Gio-Tanev 41% W 4-3
Game 10 Gio-Tanev 61% L 1-4
Flames were not afraid of sending Tanev out against McDavid but it was not the overall game play based on having a shut down d-man.
