Hyman is the highest priced forward they could get, and they got him. Thats also a win for the Oilers. They needed to be competitive in the next 4 years to entice Mc/Drai to re-sign. Anything to increase the chances Mc/Drai re-sign is a huge win.
Years 4-7 of the contract might be bad value, but it's a good deal overall that makes sense given their contention window.

How does this improve the top line? Do they score more goals? Hard to imagine that. Do they defend better? He’s not a defensive liability but I’m not sure he’s a defensive conscience like, say Lindholm was on the Monahan line, or Bergeron between Pasternak and Marchand. Hyman is a gritty player but that grit is mainly in the offensive end - net driving, etc.
