Isn't this the whole "nature versus nurture" debate?

Personally, I don't think there is one conclusion. Everyone is influenced in different measures. Some people will turn out OK no matter what happens and others will turn out bad no matter what happens (the nature side). Other people are heavily influenced by how they are raised. I think most people fall somewhere in between.

The parents should (and most will) do their very best, whether their influence turns out to be 99% or 1%.
