Timing is everything, and had the Flames made it known they were interested in him, it could have been different. But he never heard anything from the hockey team because they rushed to hire Bill Peters. Sometimes patience is a good thing, but when it comes to coaches Brad Treliving has always managed to prove himself to be an incompetent. Imagine where this team could have been with Trotz behind the bench.

In other words, I was right, this was after Peters was hired. Tell me you knew Trotz wasn't going to be extended in Washington until after the Stanley Cup. In fact, his contract was able to be extended at his option because he won a cup:

Well prior to that, in April, Peters had a seven day option to opt out of his Canes contract, and was given a very brief extension. But he had to decide so Calgary had to either make him an offer or not hire him at all. he resigned on the last day of his option to take the Flames job.
So there was never a window to hire Trotz because he wasn't even available until mid-June. There was no real hint he was available until the Cup Finals.
