It's possible he just wanted to hurt the guy, but that play absolutely does have an in-game purpose. Plenty of times a guy tries to wrap it around but can't quite get it far enough out to bring it back into the net.

All BS. If you’re trying to prevent that goal a hit is not your play and Scheifele isn’t a dumb player. You throw your body into the crease, stick first.
Hitting does nothing to prevent a goal if Evans is slower. In fact, going for a hit makes it less likely you prevent a goal, because he had to travel farther.
Puck was in the net, he hit him, and followed through hard. Dirty.
