The only reason anyone is speculating about trading for Eichel is because Eichel and his agent have hinted to the Sabres that he no longer wants to play
for the team he’s under contract with. Star players can force the hands of teams who hold their rights. We just saw that with Laine and Dubois.
If Eichel demonstrates he’s willing to sour his relationship with the Sabres in order to force a move, why wouldn’t he do the same to the Flames? Any team dealing with the Sabres will want to be confident that Eichel will be happy longterm in his new destination. And the reality is Calgary (along with Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Ottawa) is regarded as an undesirable location by most players.
