Yeah, I don’t like the micro-psychoanalyzing on reactions and so on. Players react different ways. No one questioned Gio’s effort (not until this year anyway) but he’s been a pretty game faced guy. Monahan people always question because he doesn’t push and shove much, and he gets excited less, but he did seem to do a lot of work on developing his game, which implies commitment. Johnny just seems like he wants to be more serious and workmanlike in his approach, and that’s not a bad thing.
For me, effort within the play is great. Effort and “look at how much I care” after the whistle impresses me less. You get hurt by another guy and react, fine. But a big scrum after every shove or chirp wears a bit, especially if the effort wasn’t there prior to the whistle.
