Just going from memory, though, did Tampa have heavy hitters crushing opposition D last year in the bubble? Honest question as I don't know.
Also, I remember the first few games of the CGY/DAL series. The narrative from commentators was how all the hits on the Stars D was going to soften them up for later in the series.
Didn't seem to work that way.

Tampa loaded up on truculence last year and won the cup. They added Bogosian, traded a 1st round pick for Blake Coleman and also added Goodrow. They also had signed Maroon in the offseason and already had a guy like Paquette on the roster.
Those 5 guys right there is more truculence than what the Flames have now.
The Lightning were soft for years and went out and got tough and won the cup.
The Leafs have been soft for years and this offseason went out and got Simmonds, Bogosian and Thornton.
It's been a key ingredient for decades yet some posters on this board keep ignoring it and wanting the Flames to go all skill and small.
