Well it would be the teams own choosing not to recoup anything for Gaudreau. Looking forward can the Flames really commit 9-10 million a year to a winger, who will be 28 to 34 type of thing? So if they do decide to allow Gaudreau to go, there is money that's available to retain Dubois, given Tkachuck another contract, and do some other things.
The decision to retain Gaudreau is complex enough on it's own, and shoudl be considered 100% independently of whether Monahan is in the fold or not. I wouldn't even have it on my radar. Realistically the team likely does need to establish a new group of guys to lead the charges offensively and move on from Monahan and Gaudreau.
