I don't think it is so much his charisma that worked. I think he was the first candidate that just ignored scandals and pretended they didn't exist or matter. Any number of things he said on the campaign trail in 2016 would have ended other politicians careers. But because Trump made a career out of spewing b.s. and ignoring the truth, he was able to just roll right past the controversy. Once he realized he could say or do anything, he was able to say things voters wanted to hear no matter how ridiculous or unrealistic.
So I think people are right when they say someone else that is willing to be as despicable of a candidate as Trump can do a lot of damage if they have an actual agenda or angle. Trumps angle was inflating his ego. But there are plenty of people out there willing to say or do anything to further their cause.
The only thing somewhat unique about Trump is he has no shame. But we already have others in congress like McConnel or Nunes or Cruz that are pretty much at that level as well.
