But Trump wasn't the first candidate to be an "outisider", nor was he the first president to never have held an elected government position before. I recall a time not that long ago that having military experience was almost essential.

While true the unemployment rate doesn't always tell the story. For example, if you're expended all your EI benefits, you're no longer unemployed. Obama extended EI benefits to a maximum of 99 weeks in some cases and people still expended all that. And again, I'm not sure the generational argument fits in this case because it is the middle aged people 35-50 who are being unemployed, their jobs are phased out or they're just not able to re-train, technology has passed them by.
The generational people that are upset at the previous generation today? They are voting overwhelmingly Democrat.
