This is exactly it. As a "we're sorry" type thing, the Knights wanted to put him in a place that would be both comfortable for him and not feeding him to the lions so to speak while also being able to absorb his entire contract. Vancouver being on the upswing, having Beagle and Schmidt's best friend, Holtby and could also absorb the entire contract ticked all the boxes. So McCrimmon reached out to Benning and suggested the mid-round pick as the return.
McCrimmon likely saved Benning's job.
