Tanev is okay. He's a top D-man only in a bad team that got shelled in the playoffs.
To be a really good defensive defenseman, you also need to be super consistent, and Tanev isn't that either.
Plus he's just not very good.
To me this is yet another UFA overpayment for veteran truculence.
