For the Flames, they save $2M in cap, which they can really use. So for 3 years, it's a really good trade. The problem is the last few years of the contract. But I could see the Flames being willing to make that trade-off.

Does that really help the Flames even in those 3 years? The $2 million in cap savings will be spent on a Lucic replacement. Maybe you save $500K there.
Guess you have to believe OEL is an upgrade over Hanifin which maybe he is. But man, you screw yourself three years out when Lucic would have been off your books.
I can kind of see this happening actually. Mortgage the future for a slight upgrade now.
