They already have some bad contracts that are going to hurt them:
Ferland: 3 x $3.5
Roussel: 2 x $3.0
Beagle: 2 x $3.0
Eriksson: 2 x $6.0
Myers: 4 x $6.0
Luongo (Re-capture): 2 x $3.0
And the big thing is none of those contracts/penalties expire before needing to re-sign all of Pettersen, Hughes, Demko after next season.
They probably have one of the best young cores in the league right now, but they are already a cap team with Pettersen and Hughes on ELCs. And that's going to hurt them.

The only one that hurts here is the Luongo re-capture.
Ferland is done. He's going to Robidas Island. If this team lets him try and come back again, someone needs to be fired.
Roussell is fine. Beagle is over-paid. The truth is though, that I don't think we are where we are with out either of these guys. They are what separates us from the Buffalos, Floridas and Edmontons of the world.
Eriksson is likely playing his last games as a Canuck. Up until now, his cap hit has been an albatross, but it hasn't stopped the Canucks from doing anything. It's going to sting, and he's going to cost us assets. He is still a smart player, he still brings defensive ability. He's an offensive black-hole, but there it is.
Myers is... I don't hate him? That Minnesota series really warmed me up to him. Yeah he took penalties, but I can't remember a Canuck D-man making it as uncomfortable for the other team's top players as Myers did. Fiala fell off after Myers tried to murder him in the crease.
Anyways, there is no chance the Canucks move Boeser. They'll either find a way to sign Toffoli at the expense of Tanev and Stecher, or keep Tanev and Stecher. Also, don't be shocked if players like Makar, Hughes and Pettersson et al take bridge deals during the flat cap.
It's all moot though, because the team has to come back and do this again next year to make it real. Edmonton was here before and we know where they are now.
