You can win the Cup with Monahan as your #1 C, but there's maybe five wingers in the league good enough to make up for his lackluster two-way play. (Ovechkin, Panarin, Kucherov, Stone come to mind).
Conversely, there's probably 20 centres in the league good enough defensively to carry Gaudreau to a Cup. Add in a centre who can actually transition the puck and Gaudreau is touching 1.25 points-per-game easily.
Horribly difficult spot for the Flames to be in which is crushing as a fan.

This really can’t be better said.
With few tradeable assets with which to improve the team, they likely find themselves trading Gaudreau. And i said it elsewhere but more likely he wins a Cup elsewhere than Flames win without him.
Now we’re entering an off-season where the GM has to try and fix everything. Coach, goalie, all the UFA’s on the back end and a forward group not good enough. No prospects ready to help save Valimaki.
And you’ve not banked any goodwill from a run of success.
