This is exactly where I stand. Look, I'm not opposed to moving Gaudreau - and maybe you have to. But moving him likely leaves you in the same spot or marginally improves the team.

You can win the Cup with Monahan as your #1 C, but there's maybe five wingers in the league good enough to make up for his lackluster two-way play. (Ovechkin, Panarin, Kucherov, Stone come to mind).

Conversely, there's probably 20 centres in the league good enough defensively to carry Gaudreau to a Cup. Add in a centre who can actually transition the puck and Gaudreau is touching 1.25 points-per-game easily.

Horribly difficult spot for the Flames to be in which is crushing as a fan.
