Those are a couple quick examples but I'm sure there are others. The game evolves and changes in different ways and I'm in the camp that being without a stick is more of a handicap then rushing to get another one.

Agreed. Also, you can cheat it if you go to the bench - instead of them passing you a stick so that you have to skate to the bench and then turn around and skate back, just have another guy jump on and the player without a stick jump off.
1) he can jump off before the other guy gets there
2) he doesn't have to turn around
