Yeah he leveraged ownership of the club into a real estate development, but that doesn't preclude him from wanting to have a winning hockey club and wondering WTF is going on as to why that isnt occurring.

Well. Look. Theres a lot of things one can say about Katz. Keep in mind I dont know him at all, but inferences can be made.
1. He's probably not an idiot.
2. Edmontonian politicians are idiots.
3. He used the Oilers to tug at Edmontonian heart-strings to get an enormous land deal which has repaid his investment several fold.
4. Oilers fans (Tier 1) are idiots. They keep buying Season tickets regardless of price or quality of product.
5. Oilers fans (Tiers 2 and lower) are idiots. They keep buying tickets to see this team regardless of of price or quality of product and either live or on TV...sometimes they've even bought tickets to watch the Team in the arena, on TV.
Sure, he'd probably love to have his team in the playoffs and winning, the playoffs are largely profit, but it really doesnt matter much withing context.
NHL teams dont really make a lot of money off of operations, rather in increase in value of assets.
So yes, his land bequeathment from the City of Edmonton has probably been worth more than any operational profits he had or could have made even if the Oilers went all the way every year.
Make no mistake about it, the Winner of 'Katz buying the Oilers' is and was always going to be Katz himself.
As much as he may profess to love Edmonton despite never spending a second there he doesnt absolutely have to, what he loves more than Edmonton is stealing Edmontonians' money.
