You know, it's funny--I was just noticing this as well. When did the current rule become the norm? Is that a post lockout rule?
Also, when did every team adapt the player benches on both sides of the ice? I feel like every highlight I've seen from the '89 season has them on the same side, so is it safe to say that is the correct answer? For whatever reason I feel like Winnipeg was the last team to have benches on opposite sides of the ice.
