This whole fiasco has had me thinking a lot recently about remorse and recompense. A pretty big deal was made by Aliu when he told his story about the lack of any apology from Peters. Then again, attention was drawn to his own claim in the letter he wrote to Treliving that he apologized immediately for his actions.

Beyond the fact that these two claims don't really align, I am wondering how much it would have mattered. I mean, of course, if Peters was remorseful and had changed and grown since the incident I would expect an apology. But I would also expect a hell of a lot more. I don't think for something like this it is enough to merely say "I'm sorry." Yeah, Bill Peters can come back from this, and I hope he does so, but it's going to take time and a tonne of growth. If he ever gets another opportunity to coach professional hockey again, it should only happen after he has demonstrated an unequivocal and obvious change in his character.

Sometimes, an apology is just not even close to enough.
Well said. I’m reading between the lines here, but I didn’t see much genuine remorse in that letter. His comment about use of language in a professional environment leaves me wondering just how often he has talked like that in private.

I just don’t think he’s a good person based on all that I have heard. He has made lots of money in his life so maybe he can step back, humble himself and learn something and maybe take a more supervised coaching role for a non NHL team at some point.
