The blue has the popular vote, but lose because the urban centers have a vast representation. If bc and Alberta where given proper representation that equals close to Quebec’s - based on population! - then the country would get better representation instead of so heavily slanted to the Toronto’s and Montreal’s. Popular vote is hardly ever a good metric to base it on. However in Canada’s case, because of biased representation towards the east, the west constantly feels left out because we are. Even if we get the popular vote, we don’t have the seats available to reflect it in parliament.
Representation isn’t the issue. The difference between the largest and smallest riding (outside of Maritimes and Territories) isn’t that significant. In 2015 there were 81k electors per riding in Quebec and 80k per riding in Alberta. The real issue is concentration. The West has Gerrymandered itself into low vote efficiency. We have drawn a neat box and ensures 70% purity. Compared with the other parties who support is far more wide spread so they win seats with 35%.
