Calgary isn’t home for McElhinney other than he was drafted by us and has since played for 6 other teams. At 36, we just put us in another Smith situation. If he plays well, great but you’re no closer to finding a future #1 out of that position when it’s guaranteed you let him go UFA in two years.
If Varlamov wasn’t under the delusion he’s still good enough to be a number #1 he’d stay in Colorado behind Grubauer. Giving him that spot does the same that Lehner does.
The smart move here is a 32 year old Talbot who has the required skill, will come on a short term and low cap hit, be content in a tandem and is motivated to prove himself. It tides us over just long enough to get a better sense of what we have in Rittich, Parsons and Gillies will either boom or bust in the AHL and we can wait out other goalie acquisition options

Lehner/Rittich would be my choice and worth the cost. (If Lehner would come to Calgary)
We'll know soon enough how smart a move it is/was to sign Cam Talbot.
