That "pretty corral-able pass" should have been "Just clear it out - off the glass or up a clear lane."
If Brodie had just done that when he had the puck then no goal. He chose to try to make an in-zone pass. At that point, yes, he is out of the play and not responsible.
He tired to make something out of nothing rather than ice the puck.
