You can say what you want about Neal the person wanting to be here* and Kovalchuk the husband preferring Los Angeles, but in a vacuum, the risk with Neal is far greater, and always was even in the offseason with Neal coming off a 25 goal season and Kovalchuk coming from the KHL.

Not sure how you can speak in certainties in this area.
Kovalchuk's contract is bigger for the "window" that Calgary is trying to take advantage of.
Kovalchuk's history doesn't interest me in the least ... we didn't exactly see Jagr from the Penguins when he came in last year.
Neal is no defensive dynamo, but Kovalchuk is the King's third worst relative corsi player this year, he isn't playing all that well and is more likely to keep going in that direction at his age than Neal will in the next couple of seasons.
