Some people say he cost himself a chance at re-election when he pardoned Nixon. But, in hindsight, doing that allowed the US to get over Watergate faster. The pardon avoided years of legal proceedings and allowed the country to move on. Yes, it allowed Nixon to "get away with it" (even though he did resign as president), but perhaps the greater good was avoiding years of acrimonious investigations.

He actually played both ways, center and LB and if I'm not mistaken he was on 2 Michigan National Champions.
