That isn't exactly a fair comment though, the Oilers have been brutal but McDavid has been absolutely incredible despite the dreadful Oilers. The fact that he hasn't lead his team to a victory shouldn't be seen as a slight against him but rather a statement about how bad the Oilers club is and how little depth they have.
It doesn't take a genius to watch McDavid play and realize that he is a special player who makes the league better.

McDavid skates through players like I have never seen. It's nuts and he is fearless when on the attack.
But he lacks overall grit and his complete game isn't at the same level without the puck as when he has the puck. He is still really young, so maybe he will get tougher.
This is where Crosby, at his peak, will be remembered in a kinder light IMO. He does anything he needs to win.
But you are right, McDavid has insane talent and is far from the thing holding the Oilers back. Other than his cap hit of course, which if other things were managed well, wouldn't matter.
