There is so much out there that totally, and utterly puts the smackdown on name-brands like "Hony" [Bwaa-ha-ha  ] , panasonic, phillips etc. if you look hard enough and are willing to spend a little bit more.

Generally I agree with you, I used to work in the Chinook Sony Store and know how crummy some of their stuff is...but once in a while the big names can make a decent product.
But if price is no object then the esoteric brands are the way to go...
