At the same given flex the wood stick should produce faster shots than with composite due to increased load time of the wood stick. Composite sticks provide a faster release than wood and the release fools many people into believing that they produce a faster shot. The reason for the decrease in speed was probably more of a matter of using a non-tapered flex as opposed to a tapered flex (which is how practically all composite sticks are made now) and not compensating for the torque of the wood shaft (the shaft twists on its axis in addition to bending) which causes the blade to turn while releasing the puck.
