Let's keep in mind that the most exhaustive head coach search in recent years yielded Gulutzan.
Prior to him, we had:
- Jay Feaster's best friend
- Darryl Sutter's brother
- Darryl Sutter's former boss
- Promotion from within
- Coach who had been fired mid-season by another team less than a month before he was hired by the Flames
Other than Brent, all of those other coaches took the Flames to the playoffs and won playoff games (and two of them won playoff rounds).
Maybe extensive searches are overrated.
Also, as has been mentioned many times, we don't know that Sutter and Vigneault weren't talked to.
