He's a second pairing guy and he's being paid like a second pairing guy. He's never going to win a Norris. He's one of the best skaters on the team. He's great at moving the puck out of his own end.
Sure he's not perfect, he never was. People expect way too much out of him.

We dont have picks to give, so we have to give VALUABLE assets in order to make ourselves better today so we can push DEEP into the playoffs. Brodie fits that bill, for all the reasons you've outlined above. He's not having a very strong season, and I hope that doesn't hurt his trade value. However he's 1 of a very few pieces we can use to make ourselves better, and I disagree that trading him will ruin our defense for all the reasons people have thrown out at him in this thread.
Decent player, top 4 for sure on a GOOD contract with term. He's all we got if we hope to try and make ourselves better via trade so we can hopefully go deep.
We still don't have a legitimate scoring RW and our PP has only been good for 1 game, let's not toss on the rose colored glasses and forget that.
