I can agree with that up to a point. I love Rome's interviews, and if I could just listen to those without all the call-in fluff, I'd do so happily. (Well, I'd pick and choose. I just am not equipped with the power to appreciate college football or basketball.)

My main problem with Rome's show is that the ratio of good stuff to filler has deteriorated over the years, and the filler has got very old and predictable. By this time, you could probably make a 24-hour compilation of Rome saying ‘ERRRRRRRR!’ and dragging it out to fill up airtime. Then there's his habit of repeating, in its entirety, the last funny thing someone said on the show, and informing the audience that it was funny, just in case they weren't capable of making up their own minds. And the pregnant pauses, which don't actually last nine whole months but sometimes seem to.

The Gulutzan interview is just the kind of thing Rome does best. Some interviewers would have turned it into a non-stop monologue about The Stick Throw. (Some, I suspect, would have preferred to interview the stick.) Rome is too good an interviewer to do that. He made it wide-ranging, informative, and as he always does, let his guest's personality come through. I don't like listening to his show, but I'm very glad he does pieces like this one.
