It's not that this team is a bunch of whiners. It's just that Hartley, after 4 seasons, was starting to ring on deaf ears. That's no different than any team with a similar style and reputation of coach. There needed to be someone new in the room.
While I agree that this team likely needs a tougher coach with a respected NHL tenure to move forward, I think Hartley's time with the team was done. That style of coaching maybe gets you some 2-3 seasons where the club is milked hard of whatever talent it has before they start tuning him out. And Bob was being tuned out. It sucks, but it's a pattern we've seen time and time again, often Jack Adams winners too (Barry Melrose, Pat Burns). Coach comes in, guys all sit up straighter, draws water from the rock until its dry. If we had just acquired Hartley in 2016-17 instead of having him stuck as the rebuild carry-over guy, I think this team would be doing way better. But life is about timing.
Unfortunately Treliving thought a guy who's never won a playoff round (haven't even made the playoffs before 2016-17 either) could get this team over the hump. No, he needs someone who's won it all before and demands respect in the room and Glen's far from that, for all his people skills and analytical hockey mind.
I think he's too much of a "yes" guy in terms of him and Tre's working relationship. Darryl would be perfect, as he's sat in Treliving's spot before (and added 3 of our core pieces in Gio, Backlund and Brodie) and has the tenure and charisma to challenge Tre when it's necessary. But if it hasn't happened already it's a long shot now.
