I think they know it's coming and that's the last step in the whole thing.
First they hit it out of the park in back to back drafts. With Andersson, Kylington, Mangiapane, Tkachuk, Parsons, Dube, Fox and Phillips they had an above average stocking of their system allowing them to move picks to beef up the blueline with NHL ready players.
But they knew their prospect depth was on the blueline and the young guys would push. Instead of just gifting spots they earn them and then Hamonic and Smith are very movable contracts (Stone modified NTC) for futures to restock the next window.
Picks from 2018 and 2019 weren't likely to develop in time to service this window. Why not speed it up, then have a succession plan for futures down the road.
