The other thing about the German system that's difficult (impossible?) to replicate elsewhere is the
Mittlestand sector of the economy - small and medium-sized businesses, often privately-owned and with deep roots in the community, that provide jobs for life (< 3% employee turnover a year). That provides a kind of stability and security to work in the trades and manufacturing that simply doesn't exist in North America.
