I've always thought registering your firearms on a national database would be reasonable. That way if your gun was used in a crime the registered owner would be responsible as well.
If you want to get crazy...start chipping guns
Big brother could track the guns movement(possibly in relation to other guns of the owner), how many rounds fired and other useful metadata.
Kind of seems like the next logical step considering the governments lust for our personal info.
