I'm a little surprised if McDavid's agent sold him on 8 years though... seems like the smart play would have been to do a 7 year contract so he can claw back a UFA year...

He can be offer sheeted this year, but the cost would likely be 2 firsts, a send and a third ($7.8-9.8M). Or four firsts ($9.8M+)
Anything less that 7.8 would be matched.
