That says a few things to me. First, Stone mustn't want to sign with the Flames, or is asking for the stars, making them look at other options. Second, Treliving recognizes that Smith needs a great defense in front of him, or he turns into a big sieve. Third, the Flames believe they have enough scoring in the lineup or expect some players to improve and chip in more goals. Fourth, they don't have the assets to pull off a deal for both players and have prioritized defense above offense. Might mean this could be a boring team to watch this winter as they rely on defense to make the difference.
