I don't know. When the Flames made the playoffs a Western Conference team needed 97 points. This year it looks like 90pts does it easily this year. That year over 150 goalies had a .900 Sv% or higher. This year only 41 goalies do. It was arguably a harder season for the Flames and since they've made the following improvements:
1) Hamilton over Russell
2) Tkachuk over Byron
3) Brouwer over Raymond
4) Kris Versteeg over Colborne
5) Frolik over Jones
6) Bennett over Jooris
7) Jokipakka over Smid
Even though they lost Hudler, Ramo, Hiller, and Schlemko, I think all in all they have a better team on paper right now, playing in a weaker West.
I don't think Trelivings roster decisions since then has had as much of an impact as coaching.
