For better or worse, roughly (less than) half of Americans preferred uncertainty. Perhaps that is why people are so afraid or enthusiastic. Uncertainty is both terrifying and exciting.
I think that is the pleasant fiction many people who took the anarchist's choice and voted Trump want to believe.

But we have already seen at the state level what the Republicans seek to do - and I am not talking about Trump, but about the House and the Senate. And we know the SCOTUS is about to become heavily Republican. Jammies noted that amendments to the US Constitution have all but stopped. A large part of that is due to the Supreme Court treating it like a living document rather than rigid. This has, of course, resulted most dramatically in the irony of Second Amendment fetishists arguing that it is set in stone when the reality is that the SCOTUS simply re-interpreted it.

And, of course, there is the laughable idea of an alleged billionaire 1%er with a dramatic multi-decade history of being a self-absorbed narcissist who seeks only to enrich himself will blow the whole thing up to the benefit of the public.

I think the reason why people are so terrified is actually certainty. We have no reason to anticipate the next 2-4 years will be any good.
