We can offer Gaudreau, for instance, 80M dollars at age 29 though 36 (10.0M AAV)
Another team, if they want to offer him 80M, must do so only until age 35 (11.4M AAV)
We still retain leverage over the UFA market and a retirement contract until age 36 if manageable whereas signing him until age 31 would have meant a retirement contract lasting until age 38, which would have made retention levrrage more difficukt as no team wants to be paying a 38 year old a tenth of the salary cap.
Now if a 29 year old Gaudreau truly wants to play out East rather than here, chances are we were not a contender at that point and in that case we are better suited to trade him close to the TDL in his final year for a King's Ransom. So Be It.
