Ovechkin is the best player on a loaded caps team. Gaudreau is most likely the best forward on a rebuilding team. Ovechkin was a beast in the playoffs, one of the only players to show up. He's physical, he's a leader... He's got the advantage of a decade more experience. Gaudreau is still learning his game, his game is still immature and unrefined. Ovechkin today is still much better than Gaudreau is today.
