Backlund is a fairly elite defensive center that has a lot of speed, IQ, and a non-stop motor. He seems like a really good character guy as well. Stajan can NOT fill his shoes any longer. Maybe 2 or 3 years ago, but not today. Stajan is not as fast, nor is he as good defensively or offensively now.

I am eager to see a Colborne - Backlund - Frolik line to start the year and see if they continue from where they left off. That line reminded me a lot of the Flames' team in Keenan's last year with a great all-round line that chipped in really well offensively.

As for Jankowski stepping in and taking over Backlund's role down the line - he hasn't done it yet. Plus, I think Jankowski might be a great 1st/2nd line winger to help solve the top 6 issues down the line, and give those lines a bit of a defensive look with a secondary option for faceoffs when the center on the line gets tossed.

I am all over moving up to 6, but I think the trade proposals are a bit drastic.

I am also against buyouts, but if that is what it took to make a deal work with Columbus, I would be on board as well.

I don't usually make trade proposals, but this seems more likely to me as to what it took:

To Calgary:
3OA + Hartnell

To Columbus:
6OA + 35OA + Poirier/Shinkaruk/Klimchuk + Wotherspoon/Kulak/

Even then, that may be too much. Taking Hartnell's contract is probably worth more than a 2nd - two 2nds? Tough to gauge the market on it - and he isn't a completely useless player, but definitely a cap dump. With a lot of teams hurting for cap space this year, I would think cap space will be bought at a premium price.

Backlund to me is probably worth around a~15th overall pick. I mean, picking around there you would hope that you draft a Backlund, more or less.

So breaking down the trade in value (by my estimates)

3OA < 6OA + 15OA + 3 2nd round picks

That seems like an awful lot to move up to me. Might be 4 2nd round picks depending on how you value Hartnell's contract dump. Backlund would be overkill I think, and would leave a huge gaping hole as the defacto premier defensive center for Gulutzan to match lines with.

I think 6OA + Backlund = 3OA.

6OA + 2nd + Anderrsen/Kylington = 3OA (though I would cry)

Just my opinion anyways.

Hartnell isn't a "cap dump" in the usual sense. He is just a piece on a team that needs space for other reasons that can be moved to gain assets as well.

he is a very good player which is miles ahead of "not useless".

I think many undervalue what the guy does...he is a complete player and a locker room leader.
