This allows them to say that this would never happen to me as I wouldn't have done X. And allows them to hide the fact that the world can be scary place where random terrible stuff happens and you can do nothing to prevent it. That's why parents get blamed. It's a coping mechanism to stop that feeling of helplessness in the pit of your stomach when you read stories like this.
