Yes, it was money driven. I never denied that. But the NHL was never directly making money off of the Olympics and was only ever hoping to get some tangential benefit through increased exposure. I.e. the aim of the WC, making money, would be as present whether the league goes to the Olympics or not.
They held a WC in 2004 even though the NHL went to the Olympics in 2002 and were going back in 2006, because the league and union wanted the money. Same thing here.
If most of the problems I listed can be solved the NHL will go to the Olympics, whether there's a WC or not. It's unlikely, but they would.
