Puck possession primarily derives fromplaystyle (Early d-zone exits, weak neutral zone play) and strategies (i.e. set plays) derive from the coach so you are incorrect. Sutter tried to cram every player into a dump and chase game, Keenan was more run and gun with zero care for special teams, Hartley emphasized effort, discipline and speed over strategy and teamplay in the D-zone.
This ultimately lead to poor possession in the neutral zone and weak entries because the D-zone play forced the same few plays over and over. The possession directly derives from the passing lanes available that is created by the strategies the team uses, the more passing lanes the more the opposition has to cover the less they can attack. When we got the puck in our zone players would usually start breaking out at top speed immediately instead of establishing open lanes. Treliving likely watched the players practicing at top speed with little correction to the ineffective strategies.
